This past week, a would be designer was kicked off Bravo’s Project Runway for breaking the rules. This was the first time someone was asked to leave and for fans of the show, like myself, this was the most anticipated episode of the season thus far. So many teasers and intriguing clues were given in the previews. Who would it be? What was his/her crime? Would there be a diva type smack down?
But, personally, when I saw the episode I found it to be a bit of a let down. I would’ve liked to have seen more drama. Turns out, ‘perfect villian for season three in the making’, Keith Michael, was asked to leave because he had pattern-making books in his room – a violation of the contest’s rules – and at one point had gone AWOL from the production.
Pattern books?? AWOL? This was not the kind of thing that was going to involve grinding stilettos into another designer’s forehead or hair pulling. These charges, although taken darn seriously by Tim Gunn, were kind of…blah.
Since the episode aired, Keith has spoken out about the incident and, not surprisingly, thinks he got a bad deal. Oh, he doesn’t deny having the pattern books. But he says, “These pattern books were not the kind that you would be able to use for practical purposes on the show. One of the books was the most detailed pattern book you would ever see about menswear that had nothing to do with anything on the show. I brought it because I was working on my menswear line at the time. And the other was a dictionary of production terms.”
And, with regard to going AWOL, it seems that Keith went to his boyfriend’s apartment to get a spare key.
I know some of our readers are Project Runway fans, so what do you think of this whole ’scandal’? Did he deserve to be booted off the show?
