The biggest celebrity news of this past week was the announcement that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are expecting their first child. Actually, it wasn’t just celebrity news, it was NEWS. I have never, in past memory, seen so much air time devoted to one couple expecting a child. It was given serious coverage on CNN. No, not just the crawl that floats by on the bottom of the screen as you’re watching an actual talking head deliver the news. Actual news. With updates every fifteen minutes. “Angelina Jolie still pregnant. Brad Pitt still the father.” War in Iraq? Feh. “Jennifer Aniston was not informed before the news broke.” Oh my God. “In other news, an explosion in…what? What’s that? Billy Bob Thornton was not informed either? Oh, the humanity.” People are covering the event with so much frenzied excitement, I’m left wondering if they will have any energy left to cover the important stories that are sure to come in the future such as “Angelina shops for baby furniture and Brad has some trouble assembling the crib” or “Angelina is spotted drinking what appears to be coffee. Lab analysis of discarded cup will reveal whether it is, in fact, decaf” or “Angelina and Brad are deciding on possible baby names. Front runners include Loofah and Chakra.” Stay tuned.
