Fun and High Fashion at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The opening ceremonies for the Torino Olympic games were dramatic, spirited and over the top. Exactly as they should have been.
There were rollerbladers with flames shooting out of their helmets, dancers clad in white with giant bubble heads, and cows on wheels. There was also what appeared to be a Ricola drill team tooting alpine horns.
Giant sun and moon balloons floated over the stadium, a ferrari raced around doing donuts and
hundreds of volunteer performers formed a giant ski jumper and moved together to show him jumping and landing and still others combined to form a giant dove.
Mix all that with Roberto Bolle, Italy’s most famous ballet dancer, performing in what appeared to be a vein-covered body stocking, Yoko Ono pleading for peace, Peter Gabriel phoning in a performance of “Imagine”, supermodel Eva Herzigova recreating the Birth of Venus and Luciano Pavarotti waving a hankie and you have just some of the more surreal and visually stunning moments of the opening ceremonies.
But, there was also beauty to be found in the quieter moments of protocol including the presentation of the Italian flag, and the parade of athletes.
Giorgio Armani designed the stunning floor length gown worn by model/singer Carla Bruni during the presentation of the Italian flag and the gowns worn by the women carrying the signs of the countries during the parade of athletes were designed by Moschino.
These dresses featured three dimensional trees, mountains and skiers and have received a lot of attention since the ceremony aired on Friday. I thought they were wonderfully done and visually interesting. But, they are probably the type of gown that you either love or hate. What do you think of them?
There is also a funny article where Dolce & Gabbana give a fashion review of the athletes’ uniforms from different nations. Click here to read what they had to say.
