Grammy Awards: Performances

Starring :

Well, it took me a while to get my Grammy thoughts in order. There was so much to think about and I couldn’t decide what to post first. So, I’ll start with the show itself. Overall, I thought the awards show performances were kind of lackluster, boring and uninspired. But, for me, there were some memorable performances:

Madonna Madonna and the Gorillaz- This pairing left me scratching my head in confusion. The members of the Gorillaz were given the Shrek treatment and appeared in 3D, De La Soul appeared out of nowhere for approximately 30 seconds and Madonna gyrated with Farrah hair, cut-off stockings, corset and a leotard. Honestly, I just wanted her to put some pants on. I mean, she has an amazing figure and has exercised every ounce of fat off her body, but her shtick is getting a little tired.

JohnLegend John Legend- I think he’s amazing. He is soulful and easy on both the eyes and ears. However, he was immediately followed by the country band “Sugarland”, which was a bit jarring.

HelterSkelter Paul McCartney- Tearing into “Helter Skelter”, he gave the most punk rock performance of the evening and he can still hit all those high notes. It was a gentle reminder from Sir Paul that he wrote one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time.

U2MaryJBlige U2 and Mary J. Blige- Although their voices didn’t really gel together all that well, their passionate, heartfelt vocals rocked the house.

Sly Sly Stone- Sly came out of seclusion to perform all too briefly with the band during an all star tribute to his music. So what if he had a foot tall platinum Mohawk, shiny silver suit and platform boots? He rocks.

JayPaulLinkin Jay Z, Linkin Park and Paul McCartney- There are some pairings during awards shows that defy description. This was one of them.

GolddiggerKanye West and Jamie Foxx- I have to admit, I love marching bands. So, this was pretty cool.

What did you think of the performances? Have any favorites?

Gorillaz is always given the Shrek treatment. It’s their gimmick. They’ve been like that ever since they released their first album years and years ago. Damon Albarn is actually the singer behind the band, but if you’ve seen any of their videos, they never actually appear in them.

I meant that they were rendered three dimensionally for their “live” appearance on the stage so that the other performers could interact with them. I’m used to seeing them look more “comic book-y”, since they are drawn by the guy who created the “Tank Girl” comics. I am actually familiar with David Albarn from his work not only with the Gorillaz but also with Blur, but I actually starting listening to the Gorillaz because other members of the group include Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto and Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz who were both members of the Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club. It sounds like you are a fan of the Gorillaz as well, Miss Cinnamon! Were you a Damon Albarn fan before the Gorillaz? I know a lot of people who started listening to them were also big fans of Blur.

Yep. I was into them back when there was the big Blur vs. Oasis thing. When they were on the cover of Smash Hits and Big! every week. Both are now sadly defunct…. I remember when Damon was still going out with Justine and she broke his heart. What a bitch. Not like Elastica was any good, pfft. Anyway, I always liked Blur. Parklife is a classic and never fails to get the crowd going on the dancefloor. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know the lyrics off by heart! Pulp was pretty big around that time too.. This was 4-5 years ago before Gorillaz made an appearance I think because Gorillaz came about when I was 15? I remember listening to them during my GCSEs. Then during my A-levels they released that gorgeous Out of Time song. Unfortunately, I think Oasis remains even more popular today. But yeah, Blur were effing HUGE in the heyday of brit pop.

You were 15 when the Gorillaz hit the scene? Oh my, well, it’s official. I’m absolutely ancient. Anyway, that being said, it’s absolutely lovely to talk with a fellow music lover. And, a Brit-pop music lover to boot! I’ll chat with you about music anytime!

I thought the jock-strap was strange (at least it just got worse and worse) or was it not?
