Kelly Clarkson - Healthy

July 7th, 2006 at 2:35 pm by Sarah Jean Snarker » Bookmark on del.icio.us » Digg It?

Kelly Clarkson bikiniThere have been some issues here at Style Spotlight. The whole well-being of the blog might be in jeopardy. We have to think hard about how to approach beauty and health, now.

This is the kind of thing I would write a few weeks ago:

Here is Kelly Clarkson a few weeks ago, shining in health and happiness. Yes, she has some chunky spots, but overall, she looks fine. I might wear a different top, but she can still get away with a bikini! (Hey, Kelly, I discovered some arm exercises that could help to perfect you!)

Mostly kind and helpful, but now I’m afraid. Gossip blogs are usually even harsher than this one, and I felt good about that. But it seems some of the things we say hurt people. So I will try harder to be more fair.

I struggle with weight, myself. I understand medical conditions that relate to weight problems. But I’ve even fought myself with commenters. What to do?

I’ve realized at Lipped Media, one goal is to help the fashion community in some way. Have we done that? We want to promote healthy living through either feeling alright about height, finding clothes that flatter different body types, and actually, seriously, oppose the model thin stereotype. I believe in these goals.

I’m personally going to try hard to change.

I don’t think it’s an issue of what we’re saying as much as how we’re thinking. Women, we are our own worst enemies. We’re terrible to each other with the catty things we say and do. We need to be more supportive, while still being able to poke fun. But that’s just the point. Poking fun isn’t the same as being cruel. We also need to change the idea of what is healthy and acceptable. Society won’t do this for us. The media certainly won’t. We need to take it into our own hands.

The Kelly post above is a prime example. I don’t disagree with the language. It’s polite and fun while still being informative and opinioned. My issue is this: she’s not “chunky”! Why do we think she’s chunky? Because she’s not completely lean, model-thin, “perfect” as SJS says. SCREW PERFECTION! It isn’t real. Neither are the models we see hocking the designers wares. Why can’t we say, “Here is Kelly Clarkson a few weeks ago, shining in health and happiness. She looks fine. I might wear a different top, but she can still get away with a bikini! (Hey, Kelly, I discovered some arm exercises that could help with toning!)” Same basic idea, no weight issue, same comment on fashion.

Honestly, I would kill to be Kelly’s size, and that’s another issue. If Kelly is “chunky”, how am I, a 200 lbs woman who has struggled all her life with yo-yoing weight, supposed to feel? If these celebs are “fat”, what am I? Am I morbidly obese? Completely hideous? Unfit? What is the standard, where does “chunky” end and “fat” begin? Kelly is happy and beautiful. And honestly, that’s all I want to be.

    Hmm. You’re right.

Maybe I need to become a better writer and sculpt issue-filled thoughts. But I also think I have a different idea of the word chunky. It’s something specific to me, although just plain insulting to many. We all have to think carefully about words.

I wanted to leave the paragraph as was, but with the new happenings, I would have really changed the wording.

    Sorry!

I’ve had no problems with the posts on this site and see no reason to change. I hope you won’t start second guessing yourselves… If you don’t focus on the word chunky in the sentence, it says that she’s doesn’t have a really thin “perfect” and still looks good in her bikini, which I apploaud. It makes me excited to wear a bikini (for the first time) this summer and perhaps ditch my board shorts.

hey, i got to this site by accident but your discussion on kelly caught my eye. i must say that kelly is beautiful and the reason i like her is because she is not one of those uncomfortably thin people we see on media. her healthy look gives her observers an image we are comfortable with and hence we can then appreciate her music more.
if she can wear a bikini then great! she has never proclaimed to walk on a catwalk.. she is not modelling here, she is not trying to sell a bikini, just having fun. we do not talk of models and wonder why they dont sing with a better tone of voice.

  6. Nicky Says:

You don’t have to be a ’stick’ to be a star, Kelly has proved that over the last 5 years and although she isn’t really thin she is far from fat and she is a real person- she allows herself to eat junk food but still stays healthy and why shouldn’t she? This is what young girls should look up to, someone who is comfortable in their own body, healthy and happy, not someone who is so skinny that they have to become unhealthy and unhappy!

There is nothing wrong with Kelly Clarkson’s weight and the media should stop obsessing about it because they are creating an issue that isn’t really there and this makes other people feel that they are overweight, but they are not. Kelly Clarkson should be classed as a role model to young women not be dissed for being something she’s not!
