Oscar Trends and Fashion Tips
March 4th, 2006 at 11:43 am by HeidiGoLightly » Bookmark on del.icio.us » Digg It?As we countdown to the Academy Awards tomorrow night, I have compiled a few last minute tips for success on the red carpet. Incorporating the overall trends from the season, these tidbits should help the ladies put their best foot forward on Oscar night. As long as they are willing to learn from past mistakes.

1. Do make sure your dress has enough support. Too little and you end up looking like Gwyneth Paltrow and having your breasts described as, gasp, chicken cutlets. It would also be helpful to take another tip from Ms. Paltrow and avoid any gown which could be described using the terms “Swiss Miss”.

2. Do keep jewelry and accessories simple. In sharp contrast to Juliette Binoche, who wore every necklace she owned to the Academy Awards, the trend now is a bare neck, so I expect to see fewer necklaces and less bling on the red carpet. The focus instead will most likely be on elegant earrings and bracelets. As far as other accessories are concerned, I just hope I do not see any arm warmers like the ones worn by Ms. Binoche. Because that would just freak me out.

3. Do choose a pastel color. Walking the red carpet in a pastel gown has proven very successful in the past and the runways for spring were full of lavenders, greens and a variety of other tempting hues, so there should be plenty of choices. I also like some of the richer metallic fabrics as well so I’m hoping to see those represented. I expect to see fewer white and red gowns since they were so dominant at earlier award shows of the season. If an actress does decide to go for a pastel gown, however, take a lesson from Faith Hill and do not wear four or five pastels at once. If you do, you risk looking like a big bowl of after dinner mints.

4. Do not have a friend make your dress. Period.
5. Resist the urge to go goth. Now, don’t get me wrong. I think there is a lot to be said for gothic fashion and I’m probably one of the only people in the world who thought that the 2006 John Galliano Couture collection was amusing in a good way. But, Academy Award history teaches us that it’s a tough look to pull off. As Angelina “Morticia” Jolie illustrates.

6. Do pay attention to your hair. A bad hairstyle can increase your chances of ending up on the worst dressed lists almost as much as a bad gown. Take a lesson from Scarlett Johansson. Frizzy is bad. I expect to see the sleek updo emerge as the dominant hairstyle for this year’s ceremonies.

7. Do not, under any circumstances, call Cher for fashion suggestions. She is a one of a kind fashion “rebel” and any attempt to emulate her look will land anyone on the worst dressed lists for life.
8. Do research the history of vintage gowns. If you don’t, you risk having a Witherspoon incident.
9. Do take a look at Miss Cinnamon’s Oscar gown predictions 1 and 2. She has chosen some absolutely gorgeous frocks with specific actresses in mind. If they take her advice, they should be good to go.
